Ymir

Ymir ("rush" or "roar") was the first frost-giant. He was born out of the melted ice from the Elivagar's glacier, when the fires of Muspellheim went to Niflheim.

The sons of Bor (Odin, Ve and Vili) killed him and made the world out of his body.

"Out of Ymir's flesh | was fashioned the earth,
And the ocean out of his blood;
Of his bones the hills, | of his hair the trees,
Of his skull the heavens high."

(Grímnismál)

* The stones were made out of his teeth and such of his bones as were broken. Midgard was made out of his eyebrows.

The race of the dwarfs was made out of Brimir's ("The Bloody Moistrue") blood and the legs of Blain.
Propably these two are names of Ymir.

Ymir (or Aurgelmir) was the father of Thruthgelmir and grandfather of Bergelmir.
When the gods slew Ymir, his floating blood coused a tide and all frost-giants were killed. The only two giants, who could escape were Bergelmir and his wife.

Ymir's also the name of one of Saturn's moons.
