Suttung

Suttung ("The Old Giant") was a giant. Father of Gunnlöd and grandfather of the god Bragi.

He was the son of Gilling and brother of Baugi.

The dwarves Fjalar and Galar gave him the Odrörir as reparation for his parents death. He took the Mead of Poetry and brought it to Hnitbjorg ("Lock Rock"), where he gave it to his daughter Gunnlöd, who guarded it.

Odin disguised himself as one of the Jötuns and gave himself the name Bolverk. He helped Suttung's brother and went to Gunnlöd. She gave him three swallos of the mead, in exchange for sleeping with Bolverk.
After the nights with Gunnlöd, Odin stole the mead and flew away, changing himself into an eagle. When Odin was still in the air, he spilled some of the mead out of his mouth. In this way poetry came down to earth and men could became poets.
After that, Gunnlöd became pregnant and gave birth to Bragi, the god of poetry.

One of Saturn's monns was named after this god. The moon was found by John J. Kavelaars and Brett Gladman (23th September 2000). First they gave him the name S/2000 S 12.
