In the Edda, Mead was often called ale or beer (in my opinion Mead is definitively "Wine"). It was the ale, brewed by Aegir and his daughters, "The Billow Maidens".
There was also a goat named Heidrun, that gave Mead instead of milk. The mead of Heidrun was brought to the Einherjar in Odin's palace Valhalla.
Odin only drank Mead, his food he gave to his two wolves, Freki and Geri.
Mead was the very popular honey-wine of norse and germanic culture.
The "Mead of Poetry" was a special Mead, made out of the blood of the wise god Kvasir, after bein' slayed by the dwarves Fjalar and Galar.
They killed him and mixed his blood with honey. This Mead made the drinker a poet.
Later the giant Suttung steal the mead from the dwarves. He gave it to his daughter Gunnlod, to guard it. But she was seduced by Odin, who then steal the Mead.
TRADITIONAL RECIPE:
- Ingredients: 4 lbs raw unfiltered honey, champagne yeast and spring water to make 1 gallon.
- Process: Dissolve honey in two quarts water. Boil for 15 minutes skimming white gunk. Add to primary with water to make 1 gallon. Pitch yeast when the must is room temp. Rack to secondary when fermentation slows. Bottle when settled and clear. Age as long as you can stand it. The three year old stuff is magnificent.

(Some people are usin' ginger and vanilla to flavour the Mead).
