Helheim

Helheim or Hel ("Hell") (maybe Niflheim) was the realm of the dead, ruled by the goddess Hel and guarded by the hell-hound Garm.

Helheim was the place, where only the persons came in, that died for illness or older.

Nastrond ("Corpse-Strand"), the land of the dead, was placed in Helheim (or Niflheim) and there stands Eljudni ("Plague"), the hall of Hel.

The gate between Helheim and the world of the living was called Helgrind and the way through Hel's realm named Helvegr.

I'm not sure if Helheim was the same place as Niflheim or just a region within it. Some say it was the ninth world, located under Niflheim and Muspellheim.

Helheim could be identified with the greek "Tartaros" and Hel with "Hades".
