Halfdan, the Old was the husband of Alvig, the Wise.
They had eighteen sons
(Alvig bore nine at one birth). These nine firstborn sons were slain, but the other nine were ancestors of the most famous families in Northern hero lore.
It was fortolde that for three hundred years there should be no woman and no man in his line who was not of great repute.
Halfdan was a great warrior, he went to the east and killed the king Siygtrygg in a single combat.
These were the names of the first nine sons:
1. Thengill ("Prince" or "King"), who was called Manna-Thengill ("Prince or King of Men")
2. Raesir (poetic name for prince or king)
3. Gramr (poetic name for prince or king)
4. Gylfi (poetic name for prince or king)
5. Hilmir (poetic name for prince or king)
6. Jöfurr (poetic name for prince or king)
7. Tyggi (poetic name for prince or king)
8. Skyli or Skúli (poetic names for prince or king)
9. Harri or Herra (poetic names for prince or king)
And this is a list of the other nine and the families of which they were the ancestors:
1. Hildir - Hildings
2. Nefir - Niflungs
3. Audi - Ödlungs
4. Yngvi - Ynglings
5. Dagr - Döglings
6. Bragi - Bragnings
7. Budli - Budlungs
8. Lofdi - Lofdungs
9. Sigarr - Siklings
