Gullveig

Gullveig ("Gold-Might") was the goddess of gold, she was a sorceress and one of the Vanir.

Once the Vanir sent Gullveig to the Aesir, but the Aesir were very greedy and wanted to know how to get more and more gold. They tortured and burned her three times.

"The war I remember, | the first in the world,
When the gods with spears | had smitten Gollveig,
And in the hall | of Hor had burned her,
Three times burned, | and three times born,
Oft and again, | yet ever she lives."
(Voluspo)

The Vanir, angry of what the gods made with one of them, then attacked Asgard.

At the end of the Vanir-Aesir-War the Vanir sent Njörd, Freyr and Freyja to Asgard and Gullveig was reborn, out of the fire, as the sorcerres Heid ("Bright One").

She practised a witchcraft called seidr.
