Dvalin was one of the four harts that ate Ygdrasil's buds.

"Four harts there are, | that the highest twigs

Dvalin was one of the first dwarves created by the gods, after the Golden Age.
Dvalin maybe had given magic runes to the dwarves.

Poetic Edda: Voluspo - The Wise-Woman's Prophecy

In the Hovamol he appears as the chief of the dwarves. It was said that he was the father of some minor norns.

According to the Snorra Edda, the dwarf, that was called Dvalin was one of the Brisings, that made the Brisingamen.
