Atli, son of Ithmund, was Hjorvarth's follower. In the Helgakvitha Hjorvarthssonar (The Lay of Helgi the Son of Hjorvarth) Atli has a conversation with a bird, concerning the winning of Sigrlin. Later he killed the bird and brought Sigrlin and Alof to his King. The Jarl Franmar changed himself into an eagle and guarded them.
Then Hjorvarth married Sigrlin and Atli married Alof.

When Helgi (son of Sigrlin and Hjorvarth) was grown up, he and Atli avenged his mother's father and killed King Hrothmar.

They also killed the giant Hati ("The Hateful"). In the night, after they slew the giant, Atli kept watch during the first part of the night. Hrimgerth ("Frost Shrouded"), daughter of Hati, came to the ship and had a vigorous argument with him, till sunrise, when she died ('coused by the sunrays).
