Atla

Old Norse: Atla
Meaning: "Fury"

1. a Billow Maiden
2. a Troll-wife

1.
Atla was the daughter of Aegir and Ran. According to the Poetic Edda, she was one of the "Billow Maidens" and, by Odin, one of Heimdall's nine mothers.

Poetic Edda: Hyndluljóð -Völuspá in skamma

2.
According to Snorri she was a “troll-wife”, meaning that she was the wife of a giant (maybe Snorri meant the same giantess as the one of the Hyndluljóð).

Prose Edda: Nafnaþulur XV
