Alfhild was one of King Hjorvartd's ("Sword-Guardian") wives. By the king, she was the mother of a son named Hethin ("Fur-Clothed").
The king had four wives:
- Alfhild ("Elf-Warrior"), their son named Hethin ("Fur-Clothed");

Saereith ("Sea-Rider"), their son named Humlung;

Sinrjoth ("Ever-Red"), their son named Hymling;

Sigrlin ("The Conquering Serpent"), who was the mother of Helgi.

The beautiful maid Alfhild swore to mary only the man who could defeat her in a battle. She dressed as a man and fought King Alf. Until this fight she recognized that Alf was as strong as herself and agreed to mary him.
