Aegir, The Alebrewer, was a god (or giant) of the sea and the personification of the ocean. In his anger he often caused storms, therefore he was feared by sailors.
He was said to belong to an older dinasty of gods and that he lived before the Aesir and Vanir and will live after their death at Ragnarok.
He was the son
of Fornjotr (or Miskorblindi = "Mist-Blind") and his brothers were Logi ("Fire"), and Kari ("Air" or "Wind").
With his sister Ran, he was the father of the nine "Billow Maidens".
His two servants named Fimafeng ("Handy") and Eldir ("Fire-Kindler"), his cook.
With his wife and servants, he lived in a hall, near the island Hlesey, where he brewed ale for the gods. Every winter the gods came to his hall and drinked his ale. Aegir used gold, instead of fire, to lit up his hall, therefore gold was called "Aegir's fire".
After
Baldr's death, Loki insulted the gods in Aegir's hall and killed Aegir's servant Fimafeng (see Lokasenna).
Sometimes Aegir was called Hler and Gymir ("The Blinder"), another name of Aegir was Oegis.
He was represented as an old man, very thin with long white hairs and claws, instead of fingers.
Old Norse Ægir
His name was associated with water.
